If the sun sign is the headline, the Moon is often the fine print people actually live with. This calculator follows the Vedic path: Janma Rashi from Lahiri sidereal Chandra, with nakshatra and pada when we can place the Moon clearly.
A date alone uses a noon estimate. Add birth time and city when you can, especially if you were born near a rashi or nakshatra boundary, where the Moon moves fast.
How we calculate
Vedic Janma Rashi comes from sidereal Moon position using the Lahiri ayanamsa. With only a date, we estimate the Moon at local noon. Birth time and city work better near rashi or nakshatra boundaries.
When the Moon position is clear, we also show nakshatra and pada (quarter). This matches the Vedic card in the multi-tradition reader.

Why Moon matters in Jyotish
In Vedic astrology, the Moon sign sits close to day-to-day mind and mood. Nakshatra adds a finer lunar layer that most Western sun-sign pages never mention.
Moon sign isn't sun sign
Your Western sun and Vedic Moon rashi are different calculations. Plenty of people are something like Libra sun, Kumbha moon. Both can show up together in the full multi-tradition reading. You do not have to pick a favorite.

Do I need birth time?
It is strongly recommended. The Moon moves quickly. Without time we estimate from local noon. Time plus city is better near sign changes.
Which ayanamsa do you use?
Lahiri sidereal for Moon longitude, the same convention used elsewhere in this app's Vedic path.
